Every single morning after returning to the house from dropping off the cubs at school, or leaving the gym, or grocery shopping, Cub 4 climbs into our bed and watches The Smurfs movie…every single morning. Every morning, she asks, “Mommy, what happened to Papa Smurf?” as if I’ve never answered the question before. Every morning, she gets excited and says, “Mommy, watch this part! Watch it! You’re not looking!” when Gargamel and his cat interact with each other. Every single morning, she cracks up – I mean serious belly laughs – like she’s never seen it before!
I can’t help but to think about God’s mercy towards us when I watch Cub 4 watching The Smurfs. In Lamentations, Jeremiah wrote that God’s love for us, His mercy, is new every morning! What great assurance that is for us! We can really make a mess of things in our lives, can’t we? We speak unkind words, think unkind thoughts, and do unkind things knowingly and unknowingly. Today, I’m thankful that God gives new mercies every morning! He doesn’t keep tabs. He loves us and gives us the opportunity to try again as though it’s the very first time we’ve messed up.
When we watch The Smurfs tomorrow morning, I’ll laugh with Cub 4 again, and answer all of her questions again, and I won’t miss any of her favorite parts again…because that’s what God does for me!
Off and Running!
